Duke University faculty member Prof. Dr. Bruce Lawrence is coming to Üsküdar University in April to give a course on Sufism and History of Religions. Lawrence, who has carried out important studies in his field, will give 33 hours of lectures for three weeks within the scope of the Institute of Sufi Studies Master’s Program.

Prof. Dr. Elif Erhan, Director of the Institute of Sufi Studies, stated that the course, in addition to the content to be presented, will provide graduate students with the opportunity to become familiar with primary sources, to learn sample applications in terms of method and content, and that graduate students enrolled in other universities can also apply to take the course. In addition, all those interested in following the lessons are also offered the opportunity to enroll in distance education.

Prof. Bruce Lawrence, who holds a PhD in the History of Religions from Yale University, has researched the civilizations founded by Muslims, especially in South Asia and the Middle East, from a cultural and religious perspective. He also studied other religions in Asia, such as Hinduism, Buddhism, Sikhism and Jainism. Lawrence, who came to the forefront with his works that take into account the relations between the West and the East in the colonial and post-colonial period, has recently published “The Qur’an: A Biography and Who is Allah?”, he has made important efforts for the correct understanding of Islam against the Muslim hostility in the West.

Prof. Dr. Bruce Lawrence will meet with those who are interested in the subject in conferences open to the public in addition to the Sufism and History of Religions course. Prof. Dr. Bruce Lawrence will speak on April 3 on “Biography, Memory and Language: Kādiriyya in 17th Century North India” on April 3, “Translating Sufism-Understanding the Logic of Berzah” on April 11, and “Sufi Studies and Practice: Convergence or Divergence?” on April 18.
